Wash Guide - Horse Rugs
To get the best life from your Delzani horse rug, taking a few simple precautions will go a long way. Generally, the same care advice applies to all horse rugs – with the exception being waterproof turnouts, which need a few extra precautions (see further below).
General Horse Rugs:
(Suggested washing guide for Delzani horse rugs - polycotton ripstop, paddock rugs, wool, mesh, flag rugs)
- We suggest only ever using a cold water wash. Regardless of the rug fabric, water over 50c can damage horse rug bindings as they are polypropylene (like plastic) and they will soften/ distort/ shrink in hot water. Some washing machines have hot water wash cycles above 70c. Excessive hot water can also shrink/damage mesh rugs or rugs with high wool or cotton content
- For the same reason never tumble dry horse rugs, as the high heat has the potential to melt or damage the fabric and polypropylene bindings and straps causing shrinkage and distortion of shape.
Caring for Waterproof Denier Horse Rugs:
More precautions need to be taken with waterproof turnouts and rain sheet horse rugs. The waterproofing of these rugs is delivered via a rubber-like membrane on the underside of the rug. Should this get damaged – your rug will leak.
We suggest you avoid machine washing waterproof turnouts, instead adopting the following safety precautions.
- Water heated over 40c will start to degrade the waterproof membrane on the underlining of the fabric. You won’t even notice it – until your rug starts leaking. Only ever wash with cold water.
- We recommend you don't use harsh detergents (like Napisan, tea tree, or eucalyptus oils) or any type of spot-cleaning chemical on synthetic waterproof rugs as this can damage the waterproofing membrane.
- We suggest you hand wash them in cold water or wash them off with a damp cloth or sponge. (Never scrub). Avoid laying them out to hand wash on a harsh surface, and then walking on them if they are spread out (i.e. Like on a gravel path.) There is potential to puncture the waterproof membrane as you walk all over the rug cleaning it if there are sharp rocks or sticks underneath it.
- Line dry only - never use a tumble dryer. (again because of the heat issues)
- Washing machines, especially top loaders, with high agitation, tend to wrap the rugs in ever-tightening circles around the agitator and can damage the waterproof membrane linings from excessive stretch
- Avoid spraying a high-pressure hose at your horse rug - you will damage the small membrane waterproof pores allowing water to enter immediately.
- Never use a harsh bristled brush to scrub the outer denier, you can spike the inner membrane
- Mold and mildew are enemy number one when it comes to turnouts. It will eat away at the rubber waterproof membrane. , Never put a rug away damp or sweaty
