Winter & Waterproof Horse Rugs Australia

When Australian winters turn wet and cold, your horse needs more than a basic cover. Delzani winter horse rugs - from lightweight rainsheets to 300g heavy fill turnouts - engineered for real Australian conditions.

Delzani offers a complete range of winter horse rugs built around three decisions: fill weight, denier and fit. From 0g rainsheets for mild wet weather to 300g heavy fill turnouts for serious cold - choose the right combination for your horse, your paddock and your Australian climate. Every rug is built to proper GSM weights with proven waterproof membranes and breathable construction that holds up season after season.

Winter & Waterproof Horse Rugs | The Delzani Range

Australian winters vary wildly - and so do horses. A 600D rainsheet suits a hardy horse in coastal Queensland. A 1200D 300g turnout is what a clipped thoroughbred needs in a cold Victorian paddock. Delzani's winter range is built around that reality: fill weight, denier and fit chosen for your horse and your climate, not a generic one-size answer. Every rug uses the same proven waterproof membrane and breathable construction - the choice is just how much warmth and outer strength you need.

Which Winter Horse Rug Do You Need? | Fill Weight Guide

The right fill weight depends on your horse's condition, your climate and your paddock environment. Use this table as your starting point - then adjust based on your horse.

Choosing the Right Winter Horse Rug

  • Fill weight: 0g for rain protection only, 150g for mild winters, 200g for moderate cold, 250–300g for cold nights and exposed paddocks. Read our fill weight guide.
  • Denier: 600D for standard use, 1200D for horses hard on rugs or in rough paddocks. Denier affects durability - not warmth or waterproofing. See our 600D vs 1200D guide.
  • Fit: A rug that slips or rubs is worse than no rug. Use our sizing guide before ordering.
  • Neck combo or rug only: Neck combos provide more coverage in wind-driven rain. Detachable necks give flexibility for changeable conditions.

Why Delzani Winter Rugs Perform Differently

Most budget 1200D rugs on the market have quietly dropped their GSM. They advertise the denier but use lighter fabric than the standard requires. A true 1200D rug should be 370GSM. Many are now 300GSM or less - up to 20% thinner, with proportionally less durability. At Delzani, our rugs are built to proper GSM weights. What's on the label is what's in the rug.

Every waterproof Delzani rug uses a breathable membrane system - not just a waterproof coating. Rain is blocked from outside while moisture vapour from your horse's body can still escape, preventing heat buildup and dampness that causes chills and skin issues. Read our waterproofing guide.

FAQs: Winter Horse Rugs in Australia

What fill weight do I need for an Australian winter?
Most Australian horses do well with 150g–200g fill for winter. In colder southern regions or for horses in exposed paddocks, 250g–300g may be needed. Horses that are well sheltered and in good condition often manage with a rainsheet alone.

What's the difference between a rainsheet and a winter rug?
A rainsheet (0g fill) provides waterproof protection only - no warmth. A winter rug adds polyfill insulation to keep your horse warm as well as dry. Choose a rainsheet for mild wet winters or as a base layer under a stable rug.

Should I choose 600D or 1200D?
Both provide the same waterproofing and warmth. The difference is outer fabric strength. Choose 1200D if your horse is hard on rugs, shares a paddock, or lives in a rough environment. Choose 600D for horses easy on gear in standard paddock conditions.

Can I use a rainsheet as a winter rug?
Yes, for horses in mild winters or those with good body condition and access to shelter. For colder conditions, a filled turnout is a better choice. A rainsheet can also be layered under a stable rug for extra warmth.

How do I prevent rug rub in winter?
Use a shoulder guard or rug bib under your winter rug to protect the shoulder and wither area. Ensure the rug is correctly sized - a rug that's too large will shift and rub.

Can you rug a wet horse?
Yes, provided you use a breathable waterproof rug - not a stable rug or non-breathable cover. A waterproof turnout rug will keep the rain off while allowing your horse's body heat and moisture to escape. Avoid rugging a soaking wet horse with a filled winter rug as this can trap moisture and cause chills.
